USGBC, along with host Arup, will convene and lead a lively session focused on peer learning and collaboration among the many small and medium cities and counties that have made or are making climate action commitments. The event will support these local government climate commitments with tangible resources, advanced policy considerations and practical implementation.
The timely discussion will begin with sharing the big ideas and themes of the main Global Climate Action Summit and Carbon Smart Building Day and zero in on how cities can practically put these ideas into practice. We will engage city and community leaders from Northern California and across the country facing a spectrum of different geographical stresses, political situations, and fiscal realities, push towards greater action and progress.
The goals of this session are:
- Add a small to medium sized city-focus to the big themes of the Global Climate Action Summit
- Develop a solid understanding of the tools, policies and programs that are out there to help cities reduce emissions in the building sector
- Provide very specific examples of cities currently putting these policies into action through storytelling and peer learning
The event will aim to establish cohorts of cities and counties facing common challenges. Each jurisdiction will have the opportunity to collaborate over the next year, on actions to adopt and implement a sustainability policy for new and existing buildings; and to track and transparently share carbon emissions of their own building portfolio.
Speakers will include city officials and NGOs. The format will include engaging panels, dialogue, and breakout activities. Expect to leave inspired and with tangible ideas and plans for your city’s next step, and with the chance to join a cohort for ongoing support.
