Recent threats to the Paris Climate Accord have added new urgency to global efforts to address climate change. Effective responses to climate change will require stronger coordination between the policy and research communities. A shared research and policy agenda is needed to promote economic development while minimizing further damage to the environment. “Building the Evidence Base for Accelerated Climate Action” will address important questions facing energy systems around the world, while offering new evidence on the benefits of climate mitigation strategies. The event will also address how to make progress addressing climate change in a world where not all governments are committed to act.
A distinguished panel of experts–including from Brookings and UC Berkeley’s Center for Effective Global Action (CEGA) and the Energy Institute at Haas–will offer perspectives on the scale and urgency of the challenge as well as opportunities for policymakers and other key stakeholders to have positive impact. The event will also include informal networking opportunities for GCA summit delegates to interact with members of the UC Berkeley and Brookings communities.
About the Hosts
UC Berkeley’s Center for Effective Global Action and the Energy Institute at Haas are key research partners for leading governmental and philanthropic organizations, including the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the U.S. Agency for International Development, the United Kingdom’s Department for International Development, and California’s state government. CEGA’s network of over 80 faculty researchers rigorously assesses the impacts of social and economic development programs. The Energy Institute brings together research and curricular programs on energy business, policy, and technology commercialization. Our research on climate change has been published in leading scientific journals, including Science and Nature, and featured in the New York Times and as part of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
The Brookings Institution is a nonprofit organization devoted to independent research and policy solutions. Its mission is to conduct high-quality, independent research and, based on that research, to provide innovative, practical recommendations for policymakers and the public.
