Transportation represents roughly one-third of U.S. energy consumption and is the largest consumer of fossil fuels in the United States. The sector is also undergoing transformational change: Ride-sharing, electrification, autonomous vehicles and other technologies present unprecedented challenges and opportunities to the U.S. transportation network. The Alliance 50×50 Commission on U.S. Transportation Sector Efficiency—a coalition of business, utility, labor, and local government leaders; researchers; and environmental and consumer advocates—has been working to explore these issues and to develop a pathway and recommendations to reduce energy use in the U.S. transportation sector by 50 percent by 2050 while meeting future mobility needs. The Commission’s recommendations will be launched at a public event on September 26 in Washington DC.
The Taming Transportation Energy Use in the Face of Transformation event will highlight the groundbreaking activities already being undertaken in the transportation sector. The roundtable discussion will focus on recent activities and commitments by members of the 50×50 Commission and others, and will explore their potential to bring about significant efficiency improvements in the U.S. transportation sector, saving money for consumers, reducing traffic congestion and emissions, and boosting transportation access, employment, and competitiveness.
This event is part of a ½ day of roundtable discussions that will also include a discussion of energy transformation in the U.S., framed by the findings of the 2018 Sustainable Energy in America Factbook and hosted by the Business Council for Sustainable Energy (9:15 am – 10:15 am); and a discussion of and what is needed to galvanize a global movement that promotes building energy efficiency (12:00 – 2:00 pm) hosted by the Alliance to Save Energy and the World Resources Institute.
