In 2015, the world gathered in Paris and committed to take action to avoid catastrophic climate change. One of the most powerful actions governments and organizations can take to do this, is to phase out unabated coal-fired electricity.
Today, coal-fired power plants produce almost 40 per cent of global electricity – making them a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions. Credible analyses, including from the United Nations Emissions Gap Report and from Climate Analytics, shows that without coal phase-out by 2050, meeting the temperature goal of the Paris Agreement will be a major challenge.
The Powering Past Coal Alliance was launched at COP23 by Canada and the United Kingdom and is the first government-led initiative to eliminate unabated coal-fired electricity. Since COP23, the Alliance has expanded from 27 partners to 65 – a mix of governments and organizations – and it continues to grow.
On the margins of the GCAS, the Powering Past Coal Alliance and Bloomberg Philanthropies are proud to host an event to showcase how subnational governments are supporting the global phase-out of unabated coal-fired electricity.
Join us from 2:30 pm to 5:00 pm at the Merchants Exchange Club in downtown San Francisco for our event, The End of Coal: Subnationals going from Coal to Clean. An exclusive screening of a breakthrough film showcasing coal phase-out in Washington state will be followed by presentations from speakers from governments and organizations – including the Province of Alberta, Washington State, Bloomberg New Energy Finance, and others – on how they are transitioning away from coal.
A discussion between our presenters on the challenges and solutions to coal phase-out, co-moderated by Canada’s Ambassador for Climate Change Ms. Patricia Fuller, and the UK Special Representative for Climate Change, Mr. Nick Bridge, will follow the presentations. The event will wrap up with networking and refreshments.
Bringing together countries, regions, cities, and businesses, this event will show that the phase-out of unabated coal is not only good and possible – but it is already underway.
